À mon départ de Kuta j’étais quand même un peu triste : quel coin exquis !

Le shuttlebus traverse doucement l’île et me délivre à Mataram Mandalika où une voiture me reprend pour arriver devant le bureau de la « Marina Srikandi », la ligne de bateaux rapides entre Lombok et Bali. Par chance, un bateau est prêt à partir et je le prends, content de ne pas être obligé à passer une journée à Sengiggi que je n’apprécie pas tellement.

I hare to say that I left Kuta with regrets. A shuttlebus brought me first to Mandalika where I took a taxi to Sengiggi, directly to the office of « Marina Srikandi » the company running the speedboats between Sengiggi, Lombok and Padangbai, Bali. I could not believe my luck : there was a boat waiting to leave. I took it as I do not at all appreciate Sengiggi and not spending another day here was a good idea.

Arrivé à Padangbai, je trouve de nouveau à me loger au « Dharma ». J’y resterai trois jours.

Que faire à Padangbai ? Eh bien, causer à Martini, à Komang et à Ketud, déjeuner au Padangbai Bar qui fait du poisson frais tout les jours ou alors chez Martini. On peut être très sportif et grimper puis redescendre la crête à l’ouest de la ville pour se baigner dans les eaux cristallines de « white sand beach ». La sieste et bis repetita.

On arrival at Padangbai, I find that the « Dharma » can lodge me for three days I plan to stay here (to cool off). So that’s settled.

What to do in the small town of Padangbai ? Well, for one, speaking to people and dining on fresh fish at « Padang bai café » or at Martini’s. Then, if there is any energy left : spending a nice day at « white sand beach » after a strenuous climb up, then down a jutting promontory west of town. And that is already quite a lot of activity…And then there is always the old siesta.

Puis, le shuttlebus m’emmène à Ubud, qui à un peu grossi et par là-même pâli, maintenant ça manque un peu de « peps » dans cette ville autrefois charmante.

Je m’établis au « Darta Green Garden Homestay » dans sa verdure bien soignée. Hélas, il a augmenté ses prix. Mais ça va encore aller pour trois jours.

Le « Warung Lokal » dans la rue Goothama, lui, a changé de chef et les plats sont devenus fades (les prix restent toujours bas).

Puis le déjeuner de dimanche chez « Ibu Oka ». La spécialité ici est le « Babi Guling », le cochon farci et rôti sur broche: un délice ! On se lèche les babines.

Ibu Oka est en face d’un joli temple hindou qui, malgré la horde de touristes, reste un havre de paix.

J’ai essayé les poissons « médecin » qui ont fait merveille en enlevant la peau morte de mes pieds. Je crois je vais y retourner pour un massage des pieds…

Coup de téléphone au « Pacific Inn » à Jungutbatu sur l’île de Lembongan. Il y a de la place, et je vais passer mes derniers jours en Indonésie sur cette petite île au lieu de me battre avec les foules de Kuta Bali avant de prendre l’avion pour Langkawi, Malaisie.

A shuttlebus brings me to Ubud which, growing, has lost a bit of its charm and atmosphere. As did the « Warung Lokal » which, changing chief, has lost the spices  that made its dishes appreciated by everybody.

« Ibu Oka », staying with the dish they know to prepare best, Babi Guling (stuffed pig on spit, delicious !), maintains it justly earned fame for excellence, but seems to have lost a bit of its affluence (more concurrence?). All for the better : now you can hope to have a seat at 11.30 am without standing in line.

I phoned to the « Pacific Inn » in Jungutbatu, Lembongan island to book a room. All is OK and I don’t have to fend off the crowd in Kuta Bali just before leaving Indonesia for Langkawi.
