À l’heure où j’écris cette suite de mon voyage je suis déjà à l’étape suivante : Dalat.

Oui, la vie « trépidante » de Nha Trang m’a dévié de ma résolution d’être à jour de mes récits. Qu’ai-je fait ici ? D’abord, voir mes amis Thuong, Bernard et le petit Morgan. Avec eux, on a vu d’autres « expat », s’est rencontré sur la promenade et à été manger.

Déjà, une première déception : aucun des restaurants d’il y a deux ans n’existe encore, victimes de l’activité hallucinante de construction. Comment ils vont remplir tous ces hôtels, je ne sais point ; peut être avec des Russes, ils arrivent à raison de trois avions par jour…

I a writing this quite late, after my arrival in Dalat, the next stop of my drift towards the south. Life in Nha Trang was occupied by seeing my friends Thuong, Bernard and little Morgan, their son. Another activity was meeting other expats on the promenade to decide where to go to lunch or dinner. All this of the highest cultural importance.

I was a bit miffed that all my preferred hangouts had fallen victims to the construction craze having taken over this town. Where will they get the clients for all the megahotels they are building ? Perhaps with the Russians arriving by direct flights thrice a day…

J’avais envie d’aller voir des temples Cham dans la petite ville voisine de Phan Rang/Thap Cham. Je n’ai visité qu’un seul des deux sites, les tours Po Klong Garay, nommés après un roi du royaume Champa. Elles datent du 13ième et 14ième siècle et, bien que plus jeunes que les tours de Quy Nhon, ont pas mal souffert des intempéries : pratiquement plus de sculptures visibles. Il est vrai que la brique, matériau préféré des Cham, résiste moins bien aux éléments que le granite ou le marbre.

To get out of the beach-restaurant-bar-routine I went to the near town of Phan Rang/Thap Cham where you can visit one of the numerous Cham temples of central Vietnam. The Po Klong Garay towers are beautifully situated on a hill but, still relatively young, have lost almost all of their decorating sculptures. The towers of Quy Nhon or even My Son have resisted much better the onslaught of the elements, the french and the americans…
